What Is Sensory Integration?

What Is Sensory Integration?

Sensory integration is the way our brain uses sensory information to help us get through daily life. This concept was developed in the 1960s and 70s by Jean Ayres, an American occupational therapist and psychologist. She created a method to assess children with difficulties and support them in a structured and meaningful way.

Every day, we receive information from our body and from the world around us. Our brain processes that information so we can react quickly, plan what we’re doing, move safely, and be aware of any dangers or changes happening within us. Sensory integration is key to all sorts of daily activities—like getting dressed, eating, learning, and even working.

Jean Ayres’ work didn’t stop there. Today, it continues to guide both assessment and therapy through what we call sensory integration therapy, helping children and adults navigate their worlds with more confidence and comfort.
